I haven't had much experience with multilingual Multisite installs, but I've been using Multisite for a year now and I've also seen a few websites running Multisite multilingual installs. The majority plugins I've seen are custom made (home grown) plugins or a really expensive plugins. Multilingual Press is a good plugin to use. I'll have to experiment with it, but you should be able to achieve a multilingual Multisite blog with it along with domain mapping.
