I'm replying here because the other conversation where you asked me how I fixed this problem is closed.
I did not manage to fix it, so in the end I made a static page to look almost exactly like the standard home page. So the 3 featured items in the bottom are placed in columns on the static page. It's not as easy to update, but at least the page translates well.
